Rain Rain Go Away (Kure Beach: Day 1, Pt. 1)

We left our Chapel Hill hotel to cloudy, overcast skies. That frustrated Charly. The weather forecast looked rainy all week and we were doing our best not to be bummed. Charly prayed A LOT at night that God would grant us some warm, sunny beach weather. She wanted to build some sandcastles! So thanks to the clouds for the frowny faces.

We had a three-hour drive from Chapel Hill to Kure Beach and we couldn't check in to our cottage until 4 pm. We had a few things planned, if the weather cooperated. A walk on the Kure Beach Pier to check out the fishermen and fisherwomen sounded like fun and rain or shine we had planned on going to the Fort Fisher Aquarium. Since it was downpouring when we arrived on Pleasure Island, every vacationer in Kure Beach had the same idea! The aquarium was packed and it took multiple loops around the parking lot to find a spot.

Charly and Hayes weren't really in the mood to take pictures. They just wanted to play on the beach.

All of Charly's praying paid off because when we wrapped up the aquarium, the rain had stopped and the East Coast humidity was drying everything off. So before we checked into the cottage, we stopped at the beach just outside the aquarium.

The rain had swept through Kure Beach and was moving off into the Atlantic. The kids both remembered the beaches in Michigan from last year but I don't think either were expecting the wild waves that ocean water brings. Neither were Kelli or I!

Both kids were big fans of the beach last summer but both are apprehensive enough to make Kelli and I wonder how they would respond to the ocean. Their awe, didn't last long. They dug right in and made themselves at home!

Charly loved the waves but was more reserved than her little brother. She would run to where the waves foamed up at the shore and then sprint away from them screaming. Hayes could not be contained. We took our eyes off of him for one second only to turn around and find him on all fours in the midst of the waves! From then on all week, we couldn't keep the kid out of the water!

Not that it would have mattered to our soaked son, but it looked like one more round of showers was heading our way so we decided to find our cottage and check in before we got rained on.

Yeah, that child is a lot of fun, but gives us a run for our money!
